Despite better understanding of risk factors and protocols to limit pathogen transmission, the prevalence pf health care facility- and community-acquired MRSA has increased over the past 20 to 30 years.

In Europe, MRSA blood infection rates vary between countries. While blood isolates are a minority of MRSA infections, they are an excellent surrogate marker for overall infection rates.
