Treatment Considerations

Risk factors for C diff infections include conditions associated with altered intestinal bacterial flora, notably:
  • Patient age >65 years
  • Prior antibiotic exposure (including broad-spectrum penicillins, cephalosporins, clindamycin, and, to a lesser extent, aminoglycosides, antipseudomonals, metronidazole, and vancomycin)
  • Use of certain immunosuppressants (eg, fluorouracil, methotrexate)
Children are more likely to carry asymptomatic C diff in their intestinal tracts than are adults.
